Renters Insurance

In the excitement of getting a new apartment one thing that may be overlooked is insurance. Many first time renters aren’t even aware that this is an important part of having their own place. In case of theft, fire, or other disasters, often the only way you will be compensated is by insuring your own property. Your landlord’s insurance generally won’t cover renter’s property.

So what is renters insurance? It is insurance that will cover your property losses in case of a disaster. Often it will cover property such as furniture, electronics, clothing, appliances and much more.  Since you do not own the building you live in, it is not your responsibility to pay for maintenance or repairs, so you don’t need insurance for any of that. Renters insurance will cover property and liability so you’re not stuck without a way to pay for replacements if your possessions are stolen or damaged.

When you sign up for renters insurance, generally you provide your insurance company with an estimate of how much your total property is worth. The higher that is, the more you can expect to pay for coverage. Luckily for most of the poor college students, you won’t have to pay very much. Sometimes the location of your apartment can factor in, such as an apartment in a high theft area, which would cause your rates to go up.

There are many good reasons to get renters insurance, not the least of which is peace of mind in case you are unfortunate enough to need some help. In general renters insurance is not required, though some landlords may require it. Regardless, it is still a necessity, and highly recommended for anyone renting. Look around at different companies to find the best rates and coverage. There are quite a few out there that will let you purchase renters insurance for good prices.
